The Full Story
Michel Devanakis (b. 1962, Douala, Cameroon)
Michel Devanakis is a contemporary figurative painter whose work explores the unstable boundary between the real and the symbolic. Born to Greek parents in Douala, his early life unfolded across multiple cultural environments, an experience that continues to inform his visual language.
He studied Graphic Arts and Advertising in France and spent over two decades working as a graphic designer and illustrator. This period established a foundation in composition, visual clarity, and symbolic construction, elements that remain visible in his painting practice today.
In 2013, he turned fully to painting. His work is structured around a sustained inquiry into thresholds. Those moments where identity, belief, and perception shift from one state to another. Figures often appear suspended between presence and dissolution, realism and abstraction, suggesting a world where meaning is never entirely fixed.
His process reflects this position. Compositions are first developed digitally, then translated into oil painting using an alla prima approach. The result is a dialogue between control and immediacy, where precise construction meets the unpredictability of the painted surface.
Now based in Marathon, Greece, Devanakis is a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece (EETE). His work has received international recognition, including the Arts Club Chianciano Award 2024, and is held in private collections across Greece and abroad.
